Key & scale reference

Pick a key and see exactly which notes are in it. Useful when you are writing a melody over a beat and want it to fit instead of clashing.

Why this matters if you sing on your hooks

If your melody uses notes outside the beat's key, it sounds wrong and most people can't say why. They just don't like it.

Every beat in the catalog lists its key. Look it up, set it here, and build your melody from those notes. You physically cannot hit a bad note that way.

Start with minor pentatonic

Five notes, no half-steps between them. It's the scale most rap melodies live in, and it's forgiving — there's no combination that clashes badly. Learn it in one key first, then move it around.

Minor vs major

Dark trap and boom bap live almost entirely in minor. Afrobeats leans major, which is a big part of why it feels brighter — covered here.
