Why syllable count matters

Rap flow lives on rhythm, and rhythm is syllables per bar. When one line has 11 and the next has 19, you either rush the long one or leave dead air on the short one. Neither reads as intentional.

You don't need every line identical — variation is what keeps a verse alive. What you want is to know when you're varying, instead of finding out in the booth.

A rough guide

• 8–12 per bar — conversational, lots of space. Boom bap territory.
• 12–16 — the standard pocket for most modern rap.
• 16–24 — dense, fast delivery. Needs a beat with room, or it turns to mush.
